Blogging Through the Alphabet: Diary of a Multi-Sports Mom from A to Z ~ A is for Athletes

So, I am embarking on another journey of Blogging Through the Alphabet with my friends Amanda, Kirsten, Jennifer, Kimberley, Desiree, Markie, and Hilary. In year’s past the farthest I have made it is to letter “I”. I am hoping to change that this time around and make it across the finish line 26 weeks from now.

What’s my topic you ask? Something that I know very well… Blogging Through the Alphabet: Diary of a multi-sports Mom from A to Z. Now, I am not saying I have it all together, because I definitely don’t. However, I hope to impart how I keep up on this journey we are on. This week, I want to  introduce you to my five Athletes.

First up is Madison. She is our Speedy Scientist who plays Varsity softball with the local Christian School. She is a former Level 6 gymnast and past Track & Field Sprinter too. Softball is her game though. This season she has improved so much it is so much fun to watch her. My best memory of this year is when she was put in to pinch run on first. Bases were loaded and a power hitter was up to bat. The batter hit the ball to mid-outfield and then you saw my girl sprinting around the bases and touching home plate. I don’t even think the other team realized she had made it home! Just last week her team competed in a big tournament in TN where they came home with the Championship trophy! So exciting for these girls!

Mikayla is our resident gymnast but she has a protégé in the wings that I’ll tell you about down below. This year, Mikayla competed Level 10 for the first season and qualified for the JO Nationals (highest level of competition for Level 10, essentially their Olympics). We literally just got home from Cincinnati on Monday morning. This trip was super fun and she competed on Mother’s Day so it was extra special. Overall, she did great as a first year Level 10 and we could not be more proud of her and her accomplishments. She overcame so many fears and setbacks this season, God is good! At Nationals she scored a 9.400 (personal best at Lv10) on balance beam, an event that she struggled with all season long. We are currently navigating the waters of collegiate recruiting as she wants to compete at a Division I school. Things are headed in the right direction and our goal is to secure a commitment by the end of next season.

Montana is our double sporter who competes in cheerleading and plays softball. While she has taken some time off of softball to pursue cheerleading she is looking forward to stepping back on the field next spring. The plan is for her to play on the JV team at the school where Madison plays. Montana is a natural cheerleader! She must get that from her MiMi :-) She comes out of her shell as soon as she steps on the mat and has so much fun with her teammates. I make sure that I bundle up because boy howdy is it cold out there in the fall. But I wouldn’t miss it for the world to see her shine. I have even learned a few of the cheers and dances myself, but I won’t embarrass her or myself and keep it inside of our walls. This year she was named a POP Warner Scholar which means she excelled not only as a cheerleader but as a student athlete as well.

D-E-T-E-R-M-I-N-E-D that’s my McKenzie! To say she has been watching and waiting her turn on
the gymnastics stage is an understatement! This year she competed Level 4 and is also training TOPs. She has the best time with her teammates and loves all of her coaches. In a few short weeks she will begin her TOPs state testing in hopes of making it to National testing for a chance to make the A or B Developmental Team. In addition to training and testing TOPs, McKenzie is especially excited to begin summer training. Her goal is to wear the same leotard as Mikayla next year as an Optional gymnast. She knows if she works hard and picks up her skills that will become a reality for her. My main job is to be her encourager because she’s type A and gets upset with herself and to keep her belly inflammation down during testing time so she can be at her best. I can’t wait to see what God has in store for this little one. I know it’s going to be big so hold on to your seatbelts!

I don’t know how it happened but my Micah will be 4 on Sunday! My baby boy is growing up to be a little man child. Which has always been the plan but wow, the days are flying by and my baby is growing up. Micah loves baseball as much as he loves cars and PJ Masks! This spring he officially is old enough to play tee ball with our city’s rec league. Once again I throw on my cold weather gear because sitting on the bleachers for practice in early spring is brutal for me. And I imagine fall ball will bring the same thing but I wouldn’t have it any other way. Micah’s favorite part of tee ball is running the bases because he gets to use his “Super Cat Speed” like Catboy from PJ Masks. I will say he is quite speedy like big sister Madison.

So, there you have it! Five athletes, four different sports, twelve months of the year. Non-stop sports action for #teamcaffey, but I love cheering for my kids and their teammates every single minute! Yes, it is tiring some days. Yes, it is expensive some months as we travel. Yes, I give up things to get my kids here and there. But bottom line is that my kids love their sports and I love cheering them on even more so the memories we make along the way are worth it!

I hope you will join me as I blog from A to Z about being a multi-sports mom. If you feel led, jump on in and link up with the group I would love to read your A to Z. See you next week!

Blogging Through the Alphabet ~ Children's Books from A to Z

One of my goals for 2017 is to grow my blog more. Even if that means just gaining one more Google friend I still want to grow. To accomplish this I plan to blog more regularly during the week and have specific posts posting on set days. To start off the year, I am joining many of my Crew friends by Blogging Through the Alphabet for the next 26 weeks.

Because we like children’s books, each week I would like to share a few books that we love to read at our house. Some of the books will be from our own home library collection while other's from our public library. My goal is to post my Blogging Through the Alphabet ~ Children's Books from A to Z posts each Friday starting next week. It may be evening time until I get my post up but I hope you will join along with us and also share some of your favorites.

Blogging Through the Alphabet ~ I is for...2015 In review

It’s always fun to look back at our year in blogging. Today I am linking up with my Blogging Through the Alphabet friends Meg and Christi and also participating in the Year in Blogging review hosted by Tracy @ Work of Heart and Soul. It’s pretty simple and I hope you will join in on the fun too.

To participate, simply post the title or first sentence of your first blog post from each month. You can also add a favorite picture from each month {my pictures do not always correspond with the blog titles}, even though it doesn’t necessarily go with that post.  I would love to see your year in review, link up with Tracy on her blog in the comments.

Blogging Through the Alphabet ~ Grace Extended and the Honor Roll (Dean’s List)

I missed linking up last week with the Blogging Through the Alphabet crew, I fell asleep before getting my post finished, but I am back this week and posting what I had to say last week here too.

We picked up Marie from school on Thursday, December 17th. It was a wet and rainy day as we made the 3 hour trek to pick her up. Traffic was strangely thin and we made good timing there and back. The girls, Micah and I were so excited to see her and bring her home. Marie chatted eagerly about finals, the end of the school year, and prepping for the new semester in January on the way home. She told me that she wore her red Santa hat and red lipstick every single day, from Nov. 30th until her last day of finals, two days before. Now, I will admit that I was taken aback at the thought of her wearing red lipstick, especially since she is so fair, however in just 4 days that hat and the red lips would be her saving grace! Let me explain…

Marie left school with straight A’s in her 6 classes she took Fall semester! Late Sunday night, she was checking her grades again and noticed that her one of her professors had marked her off –75 points for attendance. I told her to call in the morning, but to send an email that night. Monday morning the professor had written back saying that his attendance book showed that she did not sign in for 8 classes! WHAT!?! The professor could not figure out why a student with an A average would miss that many unexcused classes, and said he would only take off –75 points instead of the –300 that would have been the standard deduction and an automatic “F”.

Marie and the professor spoke and emailed several times over the course of Monday, when the professor said show me your notes for those days. That’s when my heart sank…Marie threw away all her notes and papers in preparations for the new semester in January. EVERYTHING! I did not know what to tell her, her notes would prove she was in the class those days. She told the professor where she sat in class each day, and that she wore the Santa hat and red lips, but he wanted notes to show proof.

I was angry, sad, and discouraged all at once. Marie worked so hard to earn straight A’s during the semester and it was slipping away over something so small as her initials. Mr. M was not available by email in those days proceeding so I could write all I wanted, but I didn’t get a response to know whether or not he knew what was happening. It was stressful and I probably sprouted a few more grey hairs! As I dropped McKenzie off at her practice Monday evening, I prayed that a gymnastics mom I know who has “been there, done that”, with her daughters was at the gym to offer any advice. Thank you Ashley for your advice! It meant the world to me to hear another perspective and other options that might be available to try.

And then my phone rang out of the blew while talking to Ashley. It wasn’t a number I recognized but I answered it anyways and it was Mr. M! Thank you Lord!!! He had no idea what was going on, so I asked him to just listen to me for a few minutes so I could talk and get it all out. In the end, Mr. M wanted the professors email so that he could in turn email him. I love this man! He listened the whole time I talked in the parking lot in tears.

Mr. M was able to email the professor even though it was after midnight, his time, and even call me back to let me know it was sent. So Marie and I waited, all night long for a response from either M or the professor. And as it would be, email was done again, so we didn’t hear anything on the matter until mid-day Tuesday. Yes, stressful and more grey hairs.

In the end, the professor “extended grace to Marie, because grace had been extended to him.” Let the tears flow again and reason #58 why I love this university! All Marie has to do is go to the professors office in January with the girls she sat with and have them vouch that indeed she was present. The professor remembers her in the hat and lips, because she sat in the front row, every.single.day and stood out from her normal attire and appearance.

So, Marie has learned a life lesson in this whole situation and will not be throwing away anything until courses are finalized. I am grateful to the Professor in believing Marie’s word and extending grace to her two days before Christmas.

In the end, Marie has made the Dean’s list and has earned 5 A’s and 1 B, (89.6%) in Psychology, which technically should be rounded to 90% but the professor is being a stickler about rounding up. But you know what?! I know it’s an A, Marie knows its an A, so we will leave it at that and know that making the Dean’s List with a 3.81 GPA is a huge accomplishment for the first semester of Freshman year!

The weeks have flown by as we wrap up the eighth week of Blogging Through the Alphabet with Meg @ Adventures with Judeand Cristi @ Through the Calm and Through the Storm. Be sure to check out the posts from this week and see how creative everyone is as we make our way from A to Z.

Blogging Through the Alphabet ~ F is for Flipping

This little girl has got it bad! You know, when you find something you love and you go forth with it 110%. She’s gotten bit by the gymnastic bug a few years ago but now its all starting to come together.

She should come with a warning label some days…CAUTION: WILL FLIP AT ANYTIME! because her feet are rarely on the floor, especially while at home. Many times have I said, “McKenzie please stop cartwheeling {handstanding, leaping, skipping, somersaulting} in the house.”

Because she likes to take pictures I was able to also get some snapshots this afternoon. And yes, she dressed herself today Smile

She has been working hard on her press handstands and regular handstands because she wants to make the TOPs practice team come next June along with the level 3 team. Watching her sister and the other big girls in the gym is really pushing her determination. She may be tiny but she’s got Pee-Wee power and she’s ready for her chance to shine.

Six weeks down, 20 more weeks to go! This is the end of week 6 of Blogging Through the Alphabet with Meg @ Adventures with Jude and Cristi @ Through the Calm and Through the Storm. Be sure to check out the posts from this week and see how creative everyone is as we make our way from A to Z.

Blogging Through the Alphabet ~ C is for Caramel Corn

We love to make homemade caramel corn around here. In fact, Madison requested some for her birthday last weekend so we whipped up a batch.

BTTA C

The recipe is a family secret of my mom’s that has a special step, so I won’t be sharing it here, however, there are several variations online :-)

As she used to say,

 Bon Appetite!

Blogging Through the Alphabet ~ A is for Arithmetic

So, I am going to try my hand at Blogging Through the Alphabet again. Last year I think I made it to week 3, letter C. I am hoping to have better luck this year and make it through all 26 letters! Without further ado, here is my “A”.

{*none of the links I list below are affiliate links. I LOVE Teachers Pay Teachers, too much sometimes :-) }

I think it is important to have rote memory of math facts. So, this year I am making it a priority to solidify the math facts for Montana and get a jump start with McKenzie because she is such an eager learner. We use Saxon for our math curriculum and yes, you either love it or you don’t. We just happen to be in the LOVE it category. It works for our family and so it just makes sense to keep plugging away. McKenzie is currently working through Saxon 1 while Montana is in Saxon 3.

To help us learn our facts we be using a variety of materials from some of my favorite teacher vendors on the Teachers Pay Teachers , including:

Kicking It! ~ Math Facts Fluency for Addition and Subtraction

Kicking It! ~ Math Facts Fluency for Multiplication and Division

Times Alive! We were fortunate to review this program 4 years ago! I have used it with Madison and Mikayla and now I am excited to use it with Montana because she is a visual learner!

Interactive Math Packet -The Bundle (Addition and Subtraction up to 20)

The interactive math packet from The Moffatt Girls is a favorite here. Montana used this set when she was learning her addition/subtraction facts. The author also is the producer of the sight word program we use, Ready 2 Read.

1

The girls both enjoy racing the clock to complete their timed drill tests for sight word reading so I am hoping they will enjoy the math drills too.

The girls will have plenty of time to drill each other or play math games during the week to help master these facts. This will be a great time for them to study when I am working with someone else. Fluency tests will be given each Friday afternoon with intermittent prizes given out here and there. Small things like a special treat from the store etc.

Blogging Through the Alphabet is being hosted this round by Meg @ Adventures with Jude and Cristi @ Through the Calm and Through the Storm. Be sure to check out the posts and see how creative everyone is as we make our way from A to Z.

A is for apples

A Collage

So apparently I missed the memo that Marcy over at Ben and Me was no longer hosting the blogging through the alphabet series. I missed the start of her last installment while I was in the midst of first trimester pregnancy fog, but I was determined to make the new one.

 apples 001

The #abcblogging  baton has been passed to fellow blogger, Kristi at The Potter’s Hand Academy and wouldn’t you know it, yesterday the linky ended for letter A. Sigh! Oh well! I am vowing to still participate, even if a day late. :)

Pumpkins 005store bought apple on the left / apple fest apple on the right

So today I want to talk to you about apples. A local church in our area hosts an Apple Fest each year where you can order 7 different varieties of orchard fresh apples. While they are not certified organic they are super delicious and grown without the use of yucky pesticides. We love them! So much so that my girls eat 3-4 apples a day during apple fest season which is always the fourth weekend in October.

Pumpkins 007

Normally, I buy several different varieties of apples including Golden Delicious by the bushel{s} , Winesap and  Fuji by the half bushel, and this year I split a half bushel of Granny Smith with a friend. A bushel of apples is roughly 48 pounds!

  Apple Fest 2011 016

I have made applesauce and apple pies in the past, but we mostly just eat the apples throughout the day. The girls say, I am hungry…I say eat an apple! Well, everyone expect Mikayla who now has an allergy to tree fruit, Poor girl! Yep, she can not eat any fruit that grows on trees, whose flesh is eaten, without them making her throat and lips itchy.  She can still eat applesauce and apple pie so she is somewhat of a happy camper.

Apple Fest 2011 007

Do you have a favorite kind of apple?

I hope you will come back over the next 25 weeks and join me as I blog through the alphabet. I am sure Kristi would love to have a few more people join us as we go through this round of #abcblogging. So be sure to stop on by!
