Literature Guides from Progeny Press ~ a TOS review

Welcome back friends! We love adding Progeny Press guides to our Language Arts studies so we were excited to receive two new study guides this time to review. Over the years I have found that literature guides make reading even more enjoyable. This time, we were able to use the Little House on the Prairie and The Long Way to a New Land study guides.

Progeny Press has been a family owned and operated company since 1992. They produce high quality literature guides from a Christian worldview ranging from lower elementary through high school. They literally have 100+ guides and add 3-6 new titles each year covering all ages from lower elementary, upper elementary, middle school, and high school. They have got you covered!

We received an Interactive E-Guide which is a downloadable and printable study guide that goes along with the book. It’s called an interactive study guide because you don’t have to print it out. Rather, you can do all of your work directly in the PDF file on the computer. Once the study guide is complete you could then print the whole file and save your students work in a portfolio or binder. The interactive feature is really great if your child is not up to writing that much.

I am sure you are familiar with the true story of Little House on the Prairie. But it tells the story of Laura Ingalls who is living during the time of westward expansion. When her Pa decides the Big Woods of Wisconsin are too crowded for the family, the Ingalls, pack up their wagon and heads west in search of open land in Kansas. Life gets interesting once they settle into their new dwellings in Kansas.

The second study guide we received was for The Long Way to the New Land. It tells the story of Carl Erik and his family as they travel from Sweden to America. Through trials and tribulations the family faces hardship in their quest to reach America. Once they finally pass immigration, Carl Erik can finally say that they have made it and live the American dream.

Each chapter of the book is broken down in the E-Guide and the student’s knowledge is tested by several different types of learning exercises including: Vocabulary ~ multi types of exercises including multiple choice, context clues, fill-in-the-blank, and dictionary definitions. Comprehension questions ~ testing the students’ knowledge of what was read. Thinking about the story ~ thinking questions and making story connections. Descriptive writing ~ these fun exercises get kids thinking all the while encouraging writing skills. Literary devices ~ mood, irony, foreshadowing, and more are presented at grade level. Digging deeper ~ scripture and life lessons are presented in a Christian worldview.

Like past literature guides we have purchased or reviewed, we have enjoyed them tremendously. I love that the interactive format allows the student to type in the answers directly on their computer screen which is awesome for older students! It is also great for my 4th grader because she can now work on her literature as we are out and about. I also love that there is no limit on copying pages for use within our homeschool. Progeny Press Guides are economically priced from $10.99 to $27.99. Be sure to browse the online catalog for individual pricing on all the available guides.
