Weekly Wrap Up ~ Week #1: The Start of Year 17

We started back to school this week for year 17! I am going to try incredibly hard to come and pen a post each Friday night this year. I have missed being able to look back on how far the kids have come each week and throughout the year. I am still wrapping my head around the fact that I just have my two youngest learning at home.

It's always a bit of a challenge starting the year off mid-August because McKenzie's gymnastics summer schedule is still in full swing, but we make it work with the slow start. Fall practice starts at the end of the month and Micah also starts his Fall baseball training the first week of September. I love and crave routine! The kids thrive on it as well so I look forward to everything falling into place to give us a daily rhythm in the next few weeks.

This year we have added back in our Morning Time Recitations, that we refer to as MTR. If you want to know what we're using and how we do it let me know and I'll write up a post. For this school year we are focusing on the Catechism, Proverbs, and Manners. The Catechism is a review for McKenzie and an introduction for Micah. It will take us two years to get through all of the questions as we go week by week. Micah will get it again fully when he reaches Sonlight Core 200 as it is apart of the Bible portion of the HBL. We also incorporated World Watch News this year during our MTR and it has been really great!

McKenzie started her two week "Are you Ready for Algebra 2" prep course. The teacher is super and I am proud that McKenzie is in fact ready for Algebra 2 to start at the end of the month. Since the majority of Micah's courses are online he only has to complete MTR, Bible, Cursive Handwriting, free reading for 45 minutes, and History until the end of the month. He also does a lesson of German on DuoLingo each day.
*please excuse her table...it has since been cleared off and the books/supplies put away*

Speaking of German...we (Mikayla, McKenzie, Micah, and I) are learning German on DuoLingo. German is so foreign to me...Spanish is so much easier to speak and comprehend but my brain is finally starting to get the hang of it. Hopefully by December we can bring back our Foreign Language day where we only speak German as much as possible. I did this when the older girls were doing Spanish lessons.

I think we have come up with a solution for McKenzie to continue driving. Her being petite in stature initially caused an issue because she could not safely see the road. With a little bit of finagling we have come up with a plan and she is back on the road.
Our Micah man has been in weekly swimming lessons for the last 5 weeks with The British Swim Club. His Boy Scout Troop does a lot of water adventures and I want him to be comfortable in the water as well as knowing how to swim and save himself. In fact, he needs to know how to swim to rank up for his next rank as well as being classified as a "Swimmer" for summer camp. His goal is to get that classification next May. I like that this is a year-round indoor program and the classes are limited to 4 students. For the first 4 weeks it was just him and a little girl so he has gotten focused attention. So proud of the progress he has made and looking forward to him moving up through the levels to reach his goal.

Next week we take Montana to University! Wow...I can't believe we are dropping off another child to University! My dining room has been taken over with all things dorm room. Thankfully we have items that Mikayla has been able to pass down to minimize costs...except the dorm fridge. I am still a bit salty about that (IYKYK) so just know we have secured a new refrigerator that will be saved for McKenzie in 3 short years. Montana has had her last pre-University meeting with the USDA. We need to knock out a headshot photo this weekend or early next week and then she will be all set for move in day. That's it for now. I will do my best to showcase what we have accomplished each week, even if it is just posting a few pictures.

Until next time friends!

2025 ~ 2026 Plan of Study: 6th & 10th grades

My final two...my baby girl and baby boy! Not sure how we have gotten to this point, yet, here we are! I am excited for this new season in our homeschool.  It's been an extremely busy year...I feel like I have just come up for air and being able to process everything that is forth coming. Our courses have been picked since the beginning of February, but I just have not had the chance to breathe and sit and put this blog post together until now. I do love this time of the year though! Seeing what everyone is planning to use is exciting to me. Once again I am grateful to be able to take advantage of the a la carte courses from Veritas Press Scholars Academy to continue giving my children a classical education model.

 Without further ado below you will find the Plan of Study for my two youngest, McKenzie & Micah, who will be going into 10th and 6th grade.

I've said it once and I'll say it again, once you hit high school the time flys by so quickly! How is my baby girl heading into 10th grade!? Nevertheless, here we are and we are going full steam ahead with sophomore year. McKenzie will be taking three online courses, Honors Comp II, Honors Chemistry, and German I. She is most excited about finally officially starting to learn German. She has been self teaching herself with Duolingo and speaking/practicing with Mikayla who also is learning German. I guess this means I need to up my German language too because Micah has hinted that he may study German instead of Spanish too. McKenzie will take her first ACT in October to give us a baseline for where she is at. She still has her eyes set on being a collegiate gymnast and has expressed an interest in The Ivey's  or a small D2/3 school so I want to make sure academically she is ready if we go that route. Her co-op courses this year will count as part of her electives to round out her course of study. She will continue to train during the morning for gymnastics which has been working for her. I hope to implement a better evening schedule so we are not up too late studying, especially because she is going to be doing Chemistry.

Wowzers my baby boy is heading to middle schooll! Sixth grade is when we start our college prep course of study with science and Latin and it's no different this year for Micah. I didn't think he would be ready when we started 5th grade but he has grown leaps and bounds over the past year and I am excited to be at this point with him. This year will be a little different as he has requested to do more online classes with Veritas Press Scholars Academy. At first, I was a little bit in my own feelings, but I also understand that he works better not being fully accountable to me. We did compromise and say that we can try it out, but I still want to do our history together because even if he decides to stick with online classes I don't think I am willing to give up our Sonlight for Omnibus. Especially since his 4 older sisters are proof that Sonlight H/B/L "works" and fully prepares a child for university (not to say Veritas does not either). If six live courses turn out to be too intense and stressful we can and will drop a few. Honestly though I think he will be fine and this year I will be helping him manage his time and courses by checking his work and fully making sure he completes all components so he is prepared for class meetings. He is excited to have a male teacher this year for General Science and to be able to be in his Grammar & Writing course with a close family friend. For our weekly co-op we will continue to use those courses to bring the beauty and enrichment to our homeschool.

2024 ~ 2025 Plan of Study: 5th, 9th, & 12th grades

Morning friends! It’s that time of the year again. You know the one where I share all the grand plans we have for the upcoming school year. I don’t know about you, but I am super excited to share our plans with you. It’s very freeing getting the plans out of my head and onto paper and the blog. Once again, I have had all three kids enrolled in their upcoming online courses with Veritas Press Scholars since the beginning of February. Our initial plans went from Montana only taking two courses to her enrolling into five! More on that in a minute. Veritas Press has been a huge blessing in our schooling since we started utilizing their a la carte courses when Madison was in high school. I am grateful to be able to take advantage of a classical education model and come alongside the amazing teachers to give my children an amazing classical education.

I’ve been planning for next school year since last December when I had a consult with our fabulous VP Consultant, Jen. She really helped me see the big picture of things for the rest of McKenzie and Micah’s schooling. I was <this> close to enrolling McKenzie in the Veritas Press Diploma program. I didn’t for several reasons, but mainly because I don’t want to give up our way of doing history or math. What’s the saying? “If it’s not broke, then don’t fix it”.

I am excited to say that we are entering our 15th year of homeschooling! For you Mama’s in the trenches with littles or those in the middle, keep going! Bottom line… it is worth it! Every.single.minute. There will always be doubt that you’re not doing enough or doing something wrong that will mess up your child for life, but you’re not! “Do the work of homeschooling” and you will reap the benefits down the road. As always, I want to note that any links below are not affiliated links. I just put them in for my reference and yours if you want to check the curriculum out. Also, because we have been schooling for so long and I am coming up on my 5th time through high school, I already own most of the curriculum listed as I try to shop our shelves first before investing into something new.

Without further ado, here’s our 2024 ~ 2025 Plan of Study.

Micah, is rising to 5th grade! He started his online learning this school year for 4th grade, and it has been the best thing for him. He is finishing up Latin 3, Linguistics 4, and Saxon Math 3 (Saxon 5/4) online. I made a mistake and had him enrolled in Linguistics 4 instead of Linguistics 5 which would have been a better fit challenge wise. But the silver lining is that he now knows the spelling rules and his spelling is even better. For 5th grade we are going to go back to our beloved Rod & Staff Spelling because he now can read cursive which is the reason why we switched last year. For 5th grade Micah will take two courses online including Latin 4, Grammar & IEW Writing 4. We will continue using Sonlight for History for him, but I am going to tweak it to fit us as I have done with the girls for 5th grade. He will also use the self-paced history course from Veritas Press to round out our study. It's a biology year in science for us but I’m still up in the air about which curriculum we will use for Micah. I have narrowed it down to three programs, Elemental Science Logic Stage Biology, Real Science Odyssey Biology 2 (minus the evolution chapters), or BJU Homeschool Life Science. I have done both Elemental Science and RS Odyssey with his older sisters, but I am thinking he will need something different to fit his learning style. Plus, I would like something that is Christian based, so I am leaning towards BJU’s Life Science.

 Micah's Plan of Study for 2024-2025 will be:

 Bible

 ~ Veritas Press Genesis to Joshua Self-Paced Bible

 Math

~ Saxon 6/5

 Language Arts

~ Shirley Grammar 4 online with Veritas Press

 ~ IEW Structure & Style Writing, Year 1-Level 2A online with Veritas Press

 ~ Rod & Staff Spelling, Book 6

 ~ Script and Scribe Truth Traveler

~ Veritas Press Literature 4

He will read:

• Mary Poppins

The Hobbit

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer

Charlie & the Chocolate Factory

Twenty-One Balloons

Faerie Gold

Leepike Ridge

Dangerous Journey

 History/Geography

~ Sonlight Core G – Ancient History, we will spread this Core over two years

~ Veritas Press Self-Paced History – Old Testament/Ancient Egypt

 Weekly Co-Op

~ Magic School Bus Science

~ Around the World Geography

~ PE

~ Blood & Guts

 McKenzie is officially heading to high school! I am excited and a little sad at the same time. Sad because it means she just has 4 short years at home. However, I am preparing her to soar when the time comes so we are going to make the most of each of the years we have left homeschooling. She has done an amazing job at handling her course load for 8th grade. As I said earlier, I was going to sign her up for the diploma program with Veritas Press, but decided against it and we will proceed with our course of study that I know will pass the NCAA Clearinghouse and keep her competitive for USAFA (Not that Veritas Press is not competitive for highly selective universities). McKenzie will earn 6 high school credits for her 8th grade year to count towards high school. A combination of three core classes and three electives.

McKenzie's Plan of Study looks like this for 2024-2025:

 Bible {1 credit}

 ~ Sonlight Bible 210 with Westminster Catechism

 Math {1 credit}

 ~ Saxon Algebra 1

 Honors English 9 {1 credit}

 ~ Composition 1 online with Veritas Press

~ Rod & Staff Grammar, 9/10, Book 1

~ Rod & Staff Spelling 8

~ Wordly Wise, Book 9

Honors Science {1 credit}

 ~ Apologia Biology online with Veritas Press

 Honors Literature {1 credit}

 ~ Sunlight Core 210 Classical Literature

 Honors History {1 credit}

 ~ Tapestry of Grace, Year 1(Rhetoric level) – Ancient World History

 Foreign Language {1 credit}

 ~ Latin II online with Veritas Press

 Electives

 ~ Apologia Health {1 credit}

~ Drawing basics @ co-op {1/2 credit ?}

~Yearbook / Photography @ co-op {1 credit}

~ Theater @ co-op {1/2 credit ?}

 PE {1 credit}

 ~ Level 9 Gymnastics, 28 hours a week

 Extras

 ~ SAT/ACT Prep (30 minutes/day)

 Total yearly credits: 11 credits

 Montana will officially be a high school senior in August! Remember how I said time flies once they hit high school? She will continue to take dual enrollment courses to finish out her high school years. This year she will take four courses that will count for 5 dual enrollments. She is still undecided on what she wants to study at university in the fall of 2025, but these courses will give her a jump start on her general educational requirements. Montana is going to take the ACT one more time over the summer to try and raise her score a little more. She is on the bubble to going up one full point, which translates more merit money or full ride depending on which university she attends.

 Montana's Plan of Study looks like this for 2024-2025:

 Bible {1 credit}

 ~ Sonlight Bible 510 Worldview Studies

 Math {1 credit}

 ~ Calculus 1: Early Transcendental Functions online with Veritas Press (AP exam)

 Honors Science {1 credit}

 ~ Apologia Physics 1 online with Veritas Press

 Honors English 4 {1 credit} (DE)

 ~ Sonlight Core 630 British Literature (AP exam)

 Honors History {1 credit}

 ~ Sonlight Core 500 World History

 Honors Foreign Language {1 credit} (DE)

 ~ Spanish 102 at local CC (DE)

 PE {1 credit}

 ~ home workouts

 Electives

~ Psychology 101 at local CC  (DE) {1 credit}

~Art History at local CC  (DE)   {1 credit}

~ Principles of Advanced Drawing @ co-op {1/2 credit}

~ LEGO Creativity & Problem Solving @ co-op {1/2 credit}

 Extras

 ~ Mother’s Helper 1/day a week for 4 hours

~ Student Teaching Spanish 6-12 @ co-op

 Total yearly credits: 9.0 credits for High School / 15 credits for College

 That’s it in a nutshell! Thanks for reading this far. If we happen to change anything over the course of the year I will update this post.

 Until next time friends, have a blessed day!

Homeschool Memory Work with Cross Seven Ventures- Homeschool Musical Memory Tool ~ a TOS review

Disclaimer: I received a Complimentary copy of this product through the HOMESCHOOL REVIEW CREW in exchange for my honest review. I was not required to write a positive review nor was I compensated in any other way. All opinions I have expressed are my own or those of my family. I am disclosing this in accordance with FTC Regulations.

Happy Friday friends! Whohoo! Another week down and 1 week closer to finishing out our school year. As you know, we follow the classical teaching method in our homeschool and part of that is memory work for my grammar aged students. For the last few weeks, McKenzie (5th grader) and Micah (1st grader) have been using Cross Seven Ventures - Homeschool Musical Memory Tool from Cross Seven to memorize skip counting, continents and oceans, and grammar definitions.

Cross Seven was created by Laura as a way to support her own child auditory learning style with the materials from Claritas Publishing. The program is geared towards kids in the grammar stage of learning and in grades K-6th. Using audiovisual presentations and slides helps those visual and audio learners solidify the memory concepts.
We received yearly access to all four cycles of the Homeschool Musical Memory Tool that is based around the four cycles of classical education. The program covers 28 weeks of memory work in the following subject areas:
~ Scripture
~ Hymns
~ Math
~ History
~ Science
~ English Grammar
~ Latin
~ Geography
 ~ Timeline
~ Timeline song
Each subject is broken down into weekly lessons and include a corresponding video. Simply click on the subject you are reviewing for that week and the corresponding video will play. The videos are short and sweet. The tunes are catchy though so the kids will remember. If you want to test your child’s knowledge of the weekly material there are weekly quizzes built into the program. The quiz is graded as soon as it is finished and if you want to retake it for mastery learning you can. The Parent Dashboard feature tracks each of your student’s memory work progress.
The Homeschool Musical Memory Tool program works on your PC or tablet. You can also stream on your TV through a few different streaming apps such as FireTV, AppleTV, and Roku. For this review period we watched our lesson videos on either the school iPad or the desktop computer.
My kids learn best when information can be set to music or sang in a song and because of this I try an incorporate as much learning in this style as possible. We are not strangers to the Cross Seven Ventures LLC as we have already been using the Cycle 1 memory work guides created by Claritas Publishing this school year.
Having access to the information set to music is a huge plus in our homeschool and Micah and McKenzie’s retention! One of their favorite videos is from week 23 in Math. The video is teaching about the Types of Angles. The video is cute and it has them full of laughs each time we watched it. And guess what!? They can remember the different types of angles. We have also been working on memorizing Psalm 23. McKenzie is further along than Micah but both are making tremendous progress and will have the whole verse completely memorized in the next few weeks.
Overall, I truly love the homeschooling memory work program from Cross Seven! Incorporating Homeschooling memory work into our daily routine using Cross Seven Ventures - Homeschool Musical Memory Tool from Cross Seven has made it so much easier for me to include the classical education memory foundation in our daily studies.
I am so excited to continue using the Homeschool Musical Memory Tool next school year in Cycle 2. I wholeheartedly recommend you check out the Cross Seven company if you are looking to add memory work to your homeschool. Enjoy family game night with Maestro Mastery - Explore the Composers from Byron's Games ~ a TOS review

Disclaimer: I received a FREE copy of this product through the HOMESCHOOL REVIEW CREW in exchange for my honest review. I was not required to write a positive review nor was I compensated in any other way. All opinions I have expressed are my own or those of my family. I am disclosing this in accordance with FTC Regulations.

Happy Friday guys! Today I am excited to share with you a fun boardgame from Byron’s Games. As a game-loving, music-loving family, we have enjoyed playing Maestro Mastery - Explore the Composers over the last few weeks. Let me tell you more about it.

Bryon’s Games is a company that was created by a 6 year old boy, Bryon, when he found himself hospitalized in the Children’s Hospital of Chicago for six months. During his hospital stay he was inspired to create something fun and educational for kids like himself during their hospital stay. From that stay his first game, Continent Race, was created. Like with his other games that Byron created, Maestro Mastery shows you that learning doesn’t have to be boring!

Maestro Mastery – Explore the Composers is the third game that Byron has created. While playing it your students will learn all about 52 classical music composers and discover the way each of them contributed during the Medieval to Contemporary era. Inside your game box you receive the following game play items:
 > Instructions
> 104 color-coded matching composer cards (separated into two decks)
> 1 music timeline card
 > 1 fold-out poster of all the composers * A link to listen to musical samples from each of the composers is also included.
 To play the game use just one of the decks unless you have a large crowd of people playing. Set the game up just as you would like classic game of memory. Proceed to playing just like the game of memory, except with Maestro Mastery you want to try to match your matches by musical era.

The winner of the game is determined in one of two ways. You can either have an:

Overall winner ~ the player with the most pairs of composers

Era winner ~ the player with the greatest number of pairs from a specific era.

 *there can be multiple Era winners.

Maestro Mastery also has a built in challenge to the game to make it more challenging. To take advantage of this portion of the game the players would click a link and be taken to a YouTube video to listen to musical compositions to try to match the card. Or you can match the cards by laying the cards out face up and try to identify the person who composed the musical selection.

I have played this game several times with Montana (8th), McKenzie (5th), and Micah (1st) over the last several weeks. Each time we play the kids are getting better and better at identifying the composer and eras. We always choose the winner by the one who gets the most pairs of composers. I think this game is an excellent supplement to any music/composer curriculum. I am excited to continue to use this game as we learn about the great classical composers of the Medieval to Contemporary era.

Classical Literature Based Learning from the Wisdom Wonder Project ~ a TOS review

Hi friends! How is your school year going so far? We are finishing up our 6th week here and things are flowing smoothly. We have gotten into a nice routine and lessons are going well too. We do have a few things we have to change up, so look for that post next week. Today I am excited to tell you about a new classical homeschool science curriculum apart of the Young Scholars program from the Wisdom Wonders Project that’s an awesome fit for my little guy.

The Wisdom Wonder Project was started in 2005 as the San Luis Classical Academy by a group of parents who desired to have a classical school for their children. When they discovered that there was not a school around them, they decided to form their own school. Now, 15 years later the same group of educators in offering their product to homeschooling parents around the world.

The Wisdom Wonder Project has three curriculum packages available. They include the Little Wonders (three different levels including Pre-K, Junior-K, Kindergarten), Young Scholars (geared for 1st /2nd grade and includes three components of History, Science, and Art), and finally a video based course on Singapore Math.

We received access to the Young Scholars program that includes monthly unit studies for History, Science, and Art. You have the option of purchasing the curriculum at one time as a annual subscription or as a monthly subscription. If you subtribe annually you receive two months free. Since this is a subscription program you can only download one month at a time, however, for the purpose of this review I was able to download several months to get a complete overview of the program. Each learning component does have materials that need to be purchased for every week of the month. There is also a sample weekly schedule that is included to help you schedule your learning.

History/Literature ~ The history program uses The Story of the World by Susan Wise Bauer as the spine and begins in 7000 BC when Nomads roamed the Fertile Crescent. If you are not familiar with The Story of the World, it is a four volume set that covers history in a four year cycle. The Young Scholars History curriculum will take you through the early civilizations of ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome. It includes all the components found in a classical education including narration, copywork, geography, timeline, as well as hands-on projects. An extra materials list is also included and contains items such as puzzles, games, and extra books for suggested extras for purchase.

Science ~ The science program is also classical in design and includes vocabulary, comprehension questions, geography, and hands-on activities. The curriculum this year covers three months each on biomes, the human body, and life cycles.

Art ~ Each month you will discover the character and spirit of a new artist and art are observed and discussed. Art projects focus on techniques unique to the artist.

The mission of the Wisdom Wonder Project is to provide book-based learning with developmentally appropriate material through great books in a classical education style. This is what drew me to this curriculum. Micah and I mainly focused on the science portion of this curriculum. We are already using The Story of the World with our current history program, so I only added in some of the activities and a few extra books we didn’t already have.

Overall, we both love this curriculum! It is what I have been searching for, for several years. I am excited to continue through this program! It is gentle enough in style, yet rigorous enough for my 1st grader. Fortunately, because we are long term homeschoolers, I have many of the books and/or curriculum the program recommends. I don’t mind purchasing the items we do not have because, again, I think this is an excellent curriculum. However, If I was just starting out as a homeschooler looking for a classical approach I would love to have access to this full curriculum and all the recommended materials needed in one purchase. Yes, it would increase the monthly or annual pricing, but I think this curriculum is worth the extra expense.

Starting next week we are going to jump ahead in the science curriculum to the Human Body portion because it lines up with what McKenzie, my 5th grader, is studying. We will come back to finish the rest of the biomes study after the new year. We also will be continuing with the History/Literature portion, specifically the hands-on activities. Our history program jumps around in the chapters of SOTW, so I just find the corresponding chapter and plan our lessons that way. Micah has loved learning all about the Ancient Egyptians and next week we will be doing an archeological dig of ancient Egyptian artifacts.

If your virtual learning is not turning out the way you thought it would, I suggest you head on over to the Wisdom Wonder Project and take a closer look at this literature based curriculum! But don’t just take my word for it!
