Online Coding Class for Kids from Homeschool Code Academy ~ a TOS review

Disclaimer: I received a FREE copy of this product through the HOMESCHOOL REVIEW CREW in exchange for my honest review. I was not required to write a positive review nor was I compensated in any other way. All opinions I have expressed are my own or those of my family. I am disclosing this in accordance with FTC Regulations.

Morning! Are you in the market for a homeschool computer programing course for your children? If so, I suggest that you check into the Python for Beginners: Learn Coding at Home program from Homeschool Code Academy. With the prevalence and advancement of computers over the last several years, its never been more important to learn about computer programming.

Homecschool Code Academy was created by Matt Bohn, a software engineer to help middles school through high schoolers learn the skill of coding. Previous knowledge of coding is not necessary to complete the program using the Phython programming lesson series. All you need is an open attitude, a computer, and a willingness to learn this new, and exciting skill.

The Python programming lesson series is a self-paced, pre-recorded video course. Video lessons are short and sweet, just 3-10 minutes in length and there are no previous coding skills required to begin this course. Simply jump right in and start learning.

Your student is not just watching lessons though, they actually get to dig in and program on the Thonny.com site with the Python code. Thonny.com is a free program that can be downloaded for free for Mac or PC platforms. Mr. Bohn has video’s to help you through this process as well. Also, if your student needs to slow down the learning process for complete comprehension of what is being learned, they can! Simple go as fast or slow as needed to understand the material and concepts.

Your Python for Beginners subscription includes 10-months of access and includes 158 online videos, challenges, and teacher solutions. Throughout this course your student will have the chance to create fun, 2D graphics as well as a few arcade style games within the Python program. For a final project, the student is to create a Space Game.

For this review, McKenzie, my 5th grader was the one to take the course. While coding is not at the top of her wish list of things to learn, she did give it a shot. She liked that she could make the computer speak just by typing in a code. Since computers are a huge part of our daily lives, I hope to get at least one of my younger girls into coding. This would have been perfect for my oldest when she was in high school! She actually is a software engineer and does coding on a daily basis for her job. I also, plan to expose my son, Micah, to coding as soon as he is a bit older. He enjoys computer time and gaming, so I think a dedicated programming program such as the Python for Beginners: Learn Coding at Home from Homeschool Code Academy will be a great fit for him to explore!

Bottom line, I think you should check out this online coding class for your children! While it was not a good fit for our family just yet it may be what your student needs to spark their interest in computers, gaming, and/or coding! Bible Unearthed from Drive Thru History ~ a TOS review

Happy Friday friends! Another week of homeschooling is over for us. Today I am excited to share the newest installment from our friends at Drive Thru History® Adventures. Because we love Dave Stotts here at A Stable Beginning we were super excited to find out we were going to receive the newest program called Bible Unearthed to review.

I'll be the first one to tell you that history or learning about the Bible does not have to be boring! In fact, if you are looking for a fun way to learn definitely look no further than the programs available from Drive Thru History. We have had access to this new curriculum for the past six weeks and our whole family has enjoyed every minute of it.

Drive Thru History is a fast-paced, content-rich history experience that takes you on a fun adventure through The Gospels, Ancient civilizations, American history, and the Holy Land, all the while experiencing you are plugged right into the events that shaped the world and the Christian faith. From the people, places, and events, our host, Dave Stotts, helps make you feel as if you are right there as it happened.

In this newest installment, Dave Stotts introduces us to his friend Titus Kennedy, PhD. Titus is an expert in archaeology and gives us a thorough lesson on the Holy Land. Also in this series is Randall Niles, a longtime friend and travel companion as well as a Drive Thru History writer.

A subscription to Bible Unearthed gives you lifetime access to the 12-part series on the archeological aspects of the ancient world. As you go through the lessons you will see how ancient archeology impacts the Bible. The video lessons are roughly 15 minutes in length and include the following topics:

 1. What is Archaeology?
2. The Impact of Archaeology
3. Locating Archaeological Sites
4. The Life of an Archaeologist
5. What’s Being Discovered Today?
6. Archaeological Mysteries
7. Top Discoveries in Bible Archaeology
8. Getting Involved with Archaeology
9. Trends in Archaeology
10. Weird Archaeology
11. Accidental Discoveries in Archaeology
12. What’s Left to Be Discovered?

Each episode follows the same format and includes a video episode, written article with breathtaking detailed photos and maps included, a downloadable PDF worksheet that includes an answer guide, “Dig Deeper” articles, fun activities to engage learning, as well as access to an exclusive Facebook community to interact with other Adventurers.

We have been using this program and watching the videos as a family each week. My children at home range in age from 6-17 years old and each have enjoyed it as we as I. Bible Unearthed is so full of engaging content that we all eagerly look forward to Sunday mornings when we typically watch our video lessons. We all really like the theme song! My kids and I hum along as it plays each time. My son has also taken a big interest in archaeology and has been digging holes in our back yard in search of his own treasures from the past.

So, what's the bottom line about this curriculum? Make room in your budget to get this subscription or even better a subscription for all the courses available. Hands-down Drive Thru History is the best out there! We love Dave and most of all my children are learning and having fun watching him and his friends! Online homeschool math and algebra with MathandAlgebra.com ~ a TOS review

Hey there! Are your kids math whizzes? Or are they struggling just a bit? My own children are far from whizzes, but I do have a few that excel naturally at math. For the ones that don’t, it takes just a little bit longer to grasp concepts. I am so glad that for the last few weeks we have been able to use the MathandAlgebra.com homeschool math program to solidify their math skills.

A huge part of excelling in math is being confident in your math abilities. MathandAlgebra helps to zoom into the fundamental math and algebra skills that are needed to excel in upper level math. For this review we received access to the complete four course online program for up to 3 students. There are four levels including Elementary, Intermediate, Pre-Algebra, and Algebra. I was able to enroll my daughters, Mikayla (12th) in Algebra, Montana (8th) Pre-Algebra, and McKenzie (5th) in the Elementary courses.

For Mikayla we have been using this as a fast review of Algebra in addition to her Pre-Calculus studies this school year. She is wanting to take the ACT test again in December or January to raise her math score from her only 2018 test score we have. While we have been studying for the test, I noticed her algebra skills are where she is consistently missing answers on the practice tests. Because she has been unable to test recently (because of COVID cancellations) we are looking to strengthen her basic algebra knowledge by using this program.

Montana and McKenzie have both been plugging away at their prospective levels of Pre-Algebra and Elementary math. I will say that I may move Montana back down to the Intermediate math as the Pre-Algebra seems to be more advanced for her right now. She is currently in Pre-Algebra but this program jumped right into lessons that she did not understand. And since she is one of my children who does not excel naturally at math we both feel it is best for her to take it slow so that she can master the concepts. McKenzie on the other hand is one of my children who enjoys math! She also likes worksheets so this curriculum is a great fit for her.

Getting started with the MathandAlgebra program is really easy. Each chapter is broken down into sub-chapters / concepts. Your student simply logs into their student account and starts with the first lesson and progress from there. Lessons are taught by short video instruction that teach all necessary concepts for the lesson. If you have a visual learner these videos are the jackpot! The teacher goes step-by-step through every concept. And if you don’t get it the first time then just rewind the video and start it again. There is also a worksheet to complete to test the mastery of the concept of what was just learned. Don’t worry, the answer key is also provided for the parent if math is not your thing.

Guess what!? We love this math homeschool math program! We will definitely be continuing with it through the rest of the year. Since Mikayla is working at a faster pace, typically she completes 3-4 sub-chapters a day, she will be finished with her algebra review by the beginning of December. I have already seen an improvement in her practice test scores, so we are both confident that she will raise her math sub score to the goal she set. Montana and McKenzie will also continue with the MathandAlgebra.com program, just at a slower pace.

Inspirational and educational radio station for kids with Smart Kids Radio ~ a TOS review

Happy Friday friends! I’m excited to tell you about an awesome product called Smart Kidz Radio. McKenzie, Micah, and I have been listening to Smart Kidz Radio: Member's On-Demand Radio Program Library, an educational and inspirational radio station for kids, for the last few weeks.

Smart Kidz Radio: Member’s On-Demand Radio Program Library can be described as edutainment with hundreds of songs and stories for kids. We were given access to the online, music streaming for six months. Accessing this program is as easy as using an internet browser and there are so many options on this radio program including radio programs, school programs, as well as family programs, so there is something for everyone!

In our house we listen to the radio when we do chores and as background music during our school day. Each night while the kitchen is being cleaned and the house is being tidied up you will find the radio on at our house. You also will hear the radio on as background music during our school day. We have been enjoying listening to the selections on classical composers. Some nights my son has trouble settling down and falling asleep. On these nights I would put on a story from the Smart Kidz collection to help settle him down.

Want to know a fantastic thing about this company? Not only do they have quality children’s programing, they also have a foundation called the SmartKidz Foundation, that encourages young people to make a difference not only in their lives but in the lives of others and in the global community as a whole. When you have a subscription to SmartKidz Radio, the company gives 20% of your subscription price goes directly to the SmartKidz Foundation. As a non-profit foundation they help children build self-confidence, compassion, and respect for the environment and provide educational opportunities to young people.

We love this program! I especially love that with Smart Kidz Radio I don’t have to worry about what is going to come on and if it is appropriate for my younger kids. Since it is ad-free, I know that nothing questionable will come up if I step out of the room. That peace of mind is great in these times. But don’t just take my word for it! Check out what 49 of my CrewMates think about the educational and inspirational radio station for kids by clicking the banner below.
