IEW Fix It! Grammar - Nose Tree, Level 1 ~ a TOS review

Disclaimer: I received a Complimentary copy of this product through the HOMESCHOOL REVIEW CREW in exchange for my honest review. I was not required to write a positive review nor was I compensated in any other way. All opinions I have expressed are my own or those of my family. I am disclosing this in accordance with FTC Regulations.

Morning friends! I hope you are enjoying your Spring Break week! We have been relaxing and regrouping as next week we prepare to enter our last six weeks of our regular school year. This year went by so fast but today I am excited to share with you one of our favorite homeschool language arts curriculum vendors, the Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW).
We are not strangers to this grammar curriculum provider, nor their award winning have used and reviewed several of their award winning writing curriculum over the last 13 years of homeschooling. Today I am excited to tell you about IEW’s newly revised and improved Fix It! Grammar program. We received the Nose Tree, Level 1 to use with Micah, my 7-year-old 2nd grader.
If you have been on the homeschool scene for any length of time I am sure you have heard of Mr. Pudewa and his company, Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW). His mission is to teach children "…to write well, think clearly, and express themselves eloquently and persuasively." IEW is no longer just a company to teach your child how to write. They have a multitude of products to help you completely teach Language Arts to your students. Let me tell you a little more about their grammar program and the improvements that have been made.
Pamela White, a certified Accomplished Instructor for IEW, is the author of the Fix It! Grammar series. She holds an M.A. in English and A.B.D. from Vanderbilt University. Fix It! Grammar was developed by Pamela after she was frustrated with traditional methods of teaching children grammar. Fix It! Grammar is the newly revised language arts series that teaches the principles of grammar through real stories. The real stories use sentences that contain errors that your student may make in their own everyday writing. The principle of parsing a sentence and finding the errors helps students to learn correct grammar and punctuation.
The complete Fix It! Grammar program consists of six books in the series written for third grade through high school. These include:

Elementary Level:
Fix It! Grammar: The Nose Tree, Level 1
Fix It! Grammar: Town Mouse and Country Mouse, Level 2

 Middle School Level:
Fix It! Grammar: Robin Hood, Level 3
Fix It! Grammar: Mowgli and Shere Khan, Level 4

 High School Level:
Fix It! Grammar: Frog Prince, Level 5
Fix It! Grammar: Little Mermaid, Level 6

A placement test is available to find the correct starting book for your child, however, IEW recommends that all learners start with Level 1, regardless of age. Each level is named after a story that your child will fix in just 15 minute daily lessons. Over the course of 30 weeks your child will parse sentences to correct the story.
Fix It! Grammar is a 4-day a week program and includes a Teacher’s Manual {$19} and a consumable Student Book {$19}. The option to purchase a Teacher/Student combo is also available for $29. a set. The weekly lessons are set up in the same fashion each week following these five simple steps:

Step 1: Learn It! ~ Explore the grammar concepts to be taught at the start of each new week.

Step 2: Read It! ~ In this section the student will also read the passage for the day. 120 vocabulary words are taught over the course of this book and they need to be looked up in the dictionary and defined. The student should keep either a vocabulary notebook or use flash cards to write out the definitions.

Step 3: Mark It! ~ This section has the student put their knowledge to work by parsing the passage with the parts of speech marks called for. The new edition gives the number of Mark It! errors the student is searching for at the top of the page.

Step 4: Fix It! ~ Now, the student gets down to business and makes the necessary corrections to make the sentence correct. Again at the top of the page you will find the necessary editing marks needed.

Step 5: Rewrite It! ~ Once all parsing and editing is complete your student is now ready to copy the corrected passage onto the lines at the bottom of the page or into a separate notebook.

We also received the new Fix It! Grammar Cards {$15} that contain 30 full color cards with the key grammar concepts. The cards are thick and are printed on glossy cardstock. They also come in a sturdy self-contained storage box. I love that they are versatile in that you can use them for review work or to play games. Best part is that you can use the cards for all the levels, so you only need to purchase them one time. Each level’s Teacher’s Manual tells you which card is used.
Since Micah is just starting his formal grammar lessons, we did in fact start with Book 1 for him. The short lessons are perfect for him! Using this program is quick and easy and fits our four-day school week perfectly. We followed the same format each week. On Monday, I teach the concepts for the week and we reviewed with the grammar cards each subsequent week. The rest of the week Micah worked on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday by his side to finish the weekly lessons.
I love that I have had no complaints or whining when it comes time to do our Language Arts lessons with Fix It! Grammar! Micah is interested to hear how the story progresses as he fixes the short sentence each day. The Fix It! Grammar program helps me know that Micah is getting the necessary grammar instruction he needs to learn.
The opportunity to use the Nose Tree book with Micah has been a blessing indeed. In fact, I am so impressed by this grammar curriculum that I have recently purchased the updated copy of Level 3, Robin Hood, to use with McKenzie, my rising 7th grader. I plan to have her start the program next week and to continue through our summer learning and next school year. She is no stranger to the Fix It! Grammar program and has completed Level’s 1 and 2 over the last three years.
Having a strong foundation in grammar is essential to writing and I am so glad that we have a program like Institute for Excellence in Writing. I will sing praises to this program and all of their products because it works for our family.
We have had great success with my older girls and I am confident that my younger three children will see that same success in their Language Arts because of the strong foundation that IEW curriculum provides. But don’t just take my word for it! Check out the reviews of 25 of my fellow CrewMates who also had the chance to review this Level and Levels 2-5 by clicking the banner below.

Grammar lessons in just 10 minutes with Easy Grammar Ultimate Series: Grade 11 ~ a TOS review

I’m a bit of a stickler when it comes to Grammar in our homeschool. Why? Because if you have a solid foundation in grammar, other subjects like writing will be a bit easier. I am trying to raise strong readers writers who can express their thoughts effectively in writing so I was so excited to get some extra help with Mikayla with the Easy Grammar Ultimate Series:  Grade 11 from Easy Grammar Systems.

Now, I’ve been homeschooling awhile now and I have always heard of Easy Grammar but never have jumped in to see what it is all about. I am sorry I waited so long because I love the quick and easy lessons it provides for my busy girl.

We received the digital copy of the Easy Grammar Ultimate Series: Grade 11 that also includes the Grade 11 Test Booklet. This curriculum includes 180 daily teaching lessons geared towards any student beyond 6th grade. With short 10 minute lessons, students will get step-by-step teaching lessons written at a fourth-grade reading level so that they can focus on learning the grammar concepts without all the fluff.

Each daily lesson includes several different types of grammar instruction including:
~ sentence structure
~ parts of speech
~ punctuation
~ sentence combining and more

In our house, we have been using the Easy Grammar Ultimate Series: Grade 11 since the end of July to help Mikayla prepare for her upcoming ACT. Before we started back to school in mid-August, I had scheduled Mikayla to complete 3-4 daily lessons three to four days a week. Now that we are full force into our school year she only completes 2 daily lessons on the days that she doubles at the gym, which is two days a week.

Since we received the digital copy, I simply just print the worksheet pages Mikayla needs each week. She keeps her completed papers filed within her school binder. As you work through the lessons you will find an assessment test after every 10 lessons. I found these to be a good assessment of how much information Mikayla had retained and helpful to know what she needed to spend a little more time on.
Overall, Mikayla and I have both enjoyed this language arts curriculum. She especially likes the short and sweet lessons because it makes it easy for her to get her grammar lessons completed, especially on our busy days. I love that the program is spiral and comprehensive but doesn’t take all day to learn and/or teach. I also like that the answers are provided. I have other children that need to be taught and having the ability to grade Mikayla’s work without having to spend too much time on my end is priceless for me.
Easy Grammar, Daily GRAMS & Easy Grammar Ultimate {Easy Grammar Systems Reviews}
Sixty-nine of my CrewMates reviewed several different curriculum including: Easy Grammar:  Grade 1,  Easy Grammar:  Grade 3, Daily GRAMS:  Grade 3, Easy Grammar Plus, Daily GRAMS:  Grade 7, and Easy Grammar Ultimate Series: Grade 9. Be sure to check out their reviews and see what their thoughts are on these language arts curriculums. As for us, Mikayla will continue to use this grammar curriculum in her weekly studies as well as her test prep.

Fix It! Grammar from Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW) ~ a TOS review

Happy Friday friends! It’s the end of another week of learning and today I get to share with you one my favorite vendors, the Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW).

We have used and reviewed several of their award winning products over the course of the last 10 homeschooling years. Last time I reviewed for IEW, we reviewed their Fix It! Grammar program and we received Frog Prince, or Just Desserts, Book 3. I am so excited today to share our review of The Nose Tree, Book 1.

If you have been on the homeschool scene for any length of time I am sure you have heard of Mr. Pudewa and his company, Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW). His mission is to teach children "…to write well, think clearly, and express themselves eloquently and persuasively." You might be surprised to hear that IEW is just a company for teaching writing, but it’s not! They also have a complete grammar program as well. Let me tell you a little more about it!

Pamela White, a certified Accomplished Instructor for IEW is the author of the Fix It! Grammar series. She holds an M.A. in English and A.B.D. from Vanderbilt University and currently teaches online for IEW. Fix It! Grammar was developed by Pamela after she was frustrated with traditional methods of teaching children grammar.

This grammar and writing curriculum is apart of the newly revised Language Arts series that teaches the principles of grammar through real stories. These real stories use sentences that contain common errors that your student may make in their own writing. The principle of parsing a sentence and finding the errors helps students in the long run learn correct grammar and punctuation.

There are six books within the Fix It! Grammar series written for third grade and up, including:

As you can see from the comparison chart there are many parts of grammar that is covered. If you need help placing your child into the right book, a placement test is available. However, IEW recommends that all learners start with book 1, regardless of age.

Because I was specifically looking for another grammar program for McKenzie when this review came available and the fact that she has had limited, beginning grammar instruction I knew she would start at the beginning of the program with Fix It! Grammar: The Nose Tree {book 1}. The student book retails for $15.00, while the teacher’s manual costs $19.00.

The Fix It! Grammar program is designed to just take 15-20 minutes a day, four times a week. As they progress through the book, the child will actually be writing a complete story. The student guide and the Fix It! Grammar: Nose Tree {Book 1} Teacher Manual cover 33 weeks of daily passages to correct, daily vocabulary instruction that covers 132 vocabulary words in total, reproducible student pages, clear and precise teacher’s notes and a grammar glossary. This is an easy to use program that includes daily vocabulary, indenting, capitals, marking and identifying subjects, verbs, and prepositional phrases, sentence openers, clauses, and punctuation errors; divided into 4 parts, learn it, fix it, discuss, copy it.

Learn it ~ explore a new grammar concept.
Fix it ~ find and fix errors within a short passage, four times a week.
Discuss it ~ apply the correct grammar to the passage.
Copy it ~ rewrite the corrected passage within a notebook.

Completing the work each week follows the same format with Monday being the day that I teach the weekly concept and demonstrate the correct markings. The rest of the week we study, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday with Fix It! Grammar. Since the program follows the same weekly format, McKenzie who is just finishing up 3rd grade, she is able to work somewhat independently through the daily passages with me in the room to field questions.

While my older girls have been using a solid grammar program, the opportunity to use the Nose Tree book with McKenzie has been a blessing. We are in a different season in our family where it is just me versus the children. This program helps me know that McKenzie is getting the grammar instruction she needs. McKenzie likes that she is writing a story while doing her lessons and I like that the Grammar cards that have helpful reminders of the rules of grammar are included. McKenzie likes the story aspect of the work and I especially like the included Grammar cards for extra review.

This grammar and writing program works great for us and we will be finishing this book and moving on to the next book once finished. I also plan to have my soon to be 7th grader, Montana, start in Book 3, Fix It! Grammar: Frog Prince, or Just Desserts in August and use it as a supplement to our Grammar program.

Fix It! Grammar {Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW) Reviews}
I recommend that you check out the Fix It! Grammar series if you are looking for a strong, solid grammar and Language Arts program, either as a stand alone program or as a supplement. McKenzie enjoys completing her grammar lessons and that make this Mama happy!

Fix It! Grammar gets the job done! But don’t just take my word for it. Be sure to check out what 59 of my CrewMates thought of the Fix It! Grammar: The Nose Tree {book 1} or any of the other 5 books being reviewed by clicking the banner below.

Hake Publishing: Hake/Saxon Grammar and Writing 3 ~ a TOS review

For the last few weeks McKenzie, my rising 3rd grader, and I have been working through the new Hake/Saxon Grammar and Writing 3 from Hake Publishing. I am excited to tell you more about it so let’s get started.

So, if Hake Publishing sounds familiar to you you are not being confused because they are commonly known by the name of Saxon in the homeschool community. Stephan Hake began writing for John Saxon way back in 1984 and is currently the lead author of the 3rd through 8th grade Saxon Math textbooks. Mr. Hake has long believed that students would benefit from a language arts program with the same model of incremental development and spiral review as the Saxon Math model utilizes. Thus began the Grammar & Writing series that is model after the ever popular Saxon math series.

This rigorous English language arts series is designed to help 3rd -8th graders become successful communicators. The comprehensive program covers:

~ English grammar ~ Writing ~ Punctuation ~ Spelling and ~ Vocabulary development

Each level includes development of the most common concepts of grammar including the eight parts of speech, sentence structure and diagramming, capitalization and correct word usage. There are two parts to the Hake/Saxon Grammar and Writing 3 program including a softcover teachers book, a consumable writing workbook, and a writing workbook. The 3rd grade level includes 111 lessons with 22 tests. A handy daily schedule is included inside the front cover to help you plan your year out.

The lessons are each scripted out for the teacher and an estimated breakdown of how much time should be spent on each section is given. I found these were not necessarily geared towards our homeschool day, but a helpful tracking so that we did not get sidetracked or stay on one section for too long. I did appreciate the scripted lessons for teaching I just wished the Teacher Guide also had a copy of the student pages in the consumable textbook.

Hake/Saxon Grammar and Writing 3 {Hake Publishing Reviews}
We are Saxon math users from K-12 so this program has been a great option for us for language arts instruction too. Since it is summer, McKenzie is able to work through the book 3 days a week around her gymnastics training. Because she trains mid-afternoon, it has been easy for her to get up and eat breakfast and do morning chores then hit her grammar lessons before we leave for the gym. Most days this was done without much complaint!

Overall, we have both enjoyed the lessons because they are short and to the point without much fluff. I was kind of confused on the first lesson when they discussed subject/predicates. The lesson seemed to be asking for the complete subject/predicate even though it did not say so. My daughter could not grasp the concept of the forms of “be” being a predicate at first and I had to pull out our other grammar books to break it down and explain it better to her. After this, the program has been smooth sailing.
