Immersive, adaptive learning from IXL ~ a TOS review

Happy Friday friends! Today I wanted to share with you an online personalized learning program for Math and Language Arts program that we love to use in our homeschool. IXL Learning  offers so much more than just online math drill! We have been using our annual membership to IXL you get access to Math, Language Arts, Science and Social Studies! Have you had the chance to use IXL?If not, let me tell you more about it.

IXL offers a comprehensive Online program for grades K-12 in Math, Language Arts, grades 2-8 Science, grades 2-8 Social Studies, and intro to  Spanish. IXL is a technology company from its core beginnings. Innovative education is a top priority for the producers and it is shown in their dedication to providing state of the art online learning opportunities through their program.

The skills that IXL offers are based off of state standards if your state has them, our current state of VA does, they will be laid out and coordinated within the program to help keep your child on track One of the best feature, in my opinion, is the ability to work at whichever grade level your child is at. My children typically excel in Math and they work a year ahead especially in the elementary levels. Not being confined to just “3rd grade” Math concepts helps ensure that my children are being challenged at their individual learning levels. Diagnostic tools are available to help you place your child in the right spot if you need it to fill in learning gaps. And guess what!? They now have a complete Spanish Version of the program for native Spanish speakers.

For this review, we received an annual membership that I have been using the program as a supplement for Montana (12 years old, 6th grade), McKenzie (9 years old, 3rd grade), and Micah (4.5 years old, JrK) on average 3 days a week for at least 30 minutes a session. Memberships starts at $9.95 per month or $79. A year for single subjects, Math, LA, or Spanish. Below you can see the break down for monthly versus yearly pricing per month or per year. Each additional child is just $4.00 per month or $40.00 per year.

With IXL you get the following benefits from its program:

~practice that feels like play: gain a whole new appreciation for how fun learning can be! With the addition of the new IXL app you can take your practice on the go. A great feature for our family as we are in the midst of our travel season.

~ content for your right and left side of your brain: an abundance of questions for every learning style, students can't help but build lasting skills and confidence.

~ practice that keeps you within the zone: Free from gimmicks or distractions, IXL is a place where every minute is spent truly learning.

~ learning that sticks with you: practice environment that rewards hard work and encourages students to learn from their mistakes.

~ numbers that tell a story : progress reports emailed weekly (another favorite feature!) You also get an email notification when a new skill has been learned or the child hits a milestone.

 Membership benefits include:
 - Comprehensive coverage of K–12 math curriculum. Your kids won't miss a thing!
 - Interactive language arts exercises for grades 2–4.
 - Unlimited questions in over 2,000 skills.
 - Fun and colorful practice formats. - Questions that adapt to your child's ability, increasing in difficulty as they improve.
 - Immediate feedback and question-specific explanations to solidify understanding of each concept. - Audio for all pre-K to first-grade math skills.
 - Weekly e-mail updates on your child's progress.
 - Informative, detailed reports pointing out successes and trouble spots.
 - Awards and certificates for you and your children to print out as they reach important milestones. iPad app for mobile practice.

Setting up our family account was quick and easy. Just log on to the website and fill out the parent information to create a master account. Once that is done you have the opportunity to enroll each of your children. I created a profile for each of the girls and my son and they picked their favorite picture to recognize their profile. I really liked this for Micah. He knows how to read and write his first name, which begins with an "M", but I think the picture helps to reinforce that this is his special account.

As I said at the beginning McKenzie is currently working a year ahead in math, so I wanted her to focus on her grade level math for a spiral review. Our current math program is quite comprehensive in my view, so I just wanted to reinforce the skills that they already learned last year to make sure they were solid. For McKenzie this means working on those pesky math facts and multiplication facts as well.

Montana used the 6th grade program which is the perfect supplement for days when we ran out of time or just needed to be out of the house. While she is not much of a computer learner and prefers our current book programs we use, I like that this option is available for those busy days. Overall, she has made many gains with using IXL over the last few weeks.

Micah is solidly working within the Kindergarten section and doing well. He is a different type of learner than his older sisters in the sense that he enjoys computer based learning, but can’t sit still for more than 10-15 minutes. He does however amaze me that he can log into his special account and get started by himself. He loves the short periods of IXL time and I love it because he is learning and excelling.

IXL uses the "smart score" system for its program to help with mastery of skills. Basically, the child starts by answering easy problems for the skill being learned. The more answers they get correct and their "smart score" will rise. If you miss a problem your score will decrease a little but you have the opportunity to raise it back up. 100 points on the "smart score" meter means that the skill has been mastered and your child would then earn an award. Since we have access to every level of the program offered, it has been great to have the kids practice a skill on something they are currently struggling with now.

What little kid or big kid for that matter doesn’t like stickers! An awards board is available for every level including the preschool levels  It is a sticker based incentive system! Similar to a sticker chart that is meant to motivate your child to keep practicing.  Prizes are given out for mastering certain skills which is fun and you can also get an award for the amount of time you have been practicing a certain skill or the number of questions that have been answered. The award section is all about trying to keep the children engaged and learning and quite possibly McKenzie and Micah’s favorite part. And who doesn't like stickers!

Overall, we are all thrilled with the content of IXL and what the whole program has to offer for our family. You can frequently hear my children exclaim, “I got it!” when they answer a question.

Live the Adventure with Heirloom Audio's For The Temple ~ a TOS review

Have you had the pleasure of listening to any of the audio theater productions of G.A. Henty from Heirloom Audio? We received the newest installment, For The Temple, let me tell you why we love them so!

Having reviewed several of the other titles from Heirloom Audio we are quite familiar with the outstanding Christian audio theater they produce. My children, especially Montana, my 6th grader, love listening to these audio dramas based off the novels of G.A. Henty.

During the 19th century, G.A. Henty's adventure books became popular and well known for emphasizing traits of courage, high moral character, diligence, and perseverance. Heirloom Audio Productions is passionate about bringing history's most daring expeditions and greatest adventures to life in exciting and engaging audio dramas. Each Heirloom Audio Productions CD tells the real life historical event from a G.A. Henty novel. Not only do you get to experience the event as if you were actually there, you get to meet the people who shaped the event firsthand.

“The first duty of any Jew is to protect the Temple. I will fight that battle.”

With their newest released title, For the Temple, follow John, a young Jewish man, as you are thrust into the days and events leading up to the final destruction of the Jerusalem temple by the Romans in 70 AD. John is recruited by the Jewish army to help defend the temple from Roman invaders. But to do so he must make the sacrifice and leave his fiancé, mother, and the family vineyard.

For this review we received a physical copy of the two CD set of this high energy and fast pace story focused on building character for the next generation all the while bringing history lessons to life within the chapters. With the extremely high quality audio reenactments, this story it is perfect for ages 6 years old to adult. The realities of war do shine through, just so you are aware, so please use caution if listening with younger children because there are some intense scenes. I love that the cover of the CD case depicts the story with clean, simple lines, yet makes you want to pick up the CD and see just what it is about.

We also had access to the corresponding Study Guide, it and other resources are available when you join the Live the Adventure Club. Inside the Study Guide you will find comprehension questions in the listening well section as well as questions that are designed to make you dig a little deeper in the Thinking Further section. I liked that there are vocabulary words so that you can go over these words that may be unfamiliar to your child beforehand. The Study Guide is 51 pages set against a parchment type background and includes photos and detailed descriptions of some important historical events.

Thoughts from Montana ~
“I really enjoy the audio CD’s from Heirloom Audio! Getting this newest CD was a real treat for me. I found the story to be interesting and exciting as I listened to the story of John and his attempts to save the temple. We just finished studying about the Romans so it was a nice tie into our history too.”

Since this is our busy travel season with gymnastics, we spend quite a few weekends out on the road. My new van does not have a CD player but it does have car play so I asked one of my more technically savvy daughters how to transfer the upload the story to my iTunes account. She even uploaded all of my other CD’s and now we get to listen to all of our Heirloom Audio dramas while we are on the road!

For The Temple {Heirloom Audio Reviews}

We love these audio theaters so much that when we missed being on the review of St. Bartholomew’s Eve, so we purchased our own copy. Adding these radio theater productions to my daughter's listening time is a win-win for us. Beloved: 365 Devotions for Young Women from Zondervan ~ a TOS review

If you are looking for a great new devotional in time for Christmas or the New Year I have a fantastic one to tell you about today! As the mother of 5 daughters, I was thrilled to receive Beloved: 365 Devotions for Young Women from Zondervan. When I think of Bibles I immediately think of Zondervan, because both of my main Bibles are published by this well-known Christian company.

This is a gorgeous hardcover book filled with 365 inspiring stories of girls and women in the Bible from the NIV translation. You will read about people such as Ruth, Esther, and Mary as their stories will encourage you in your faith and give you an abundance of confidence to tackle your day. Each devotion is set up the same way each day. There is a main scripture written in maroon followed by a brief summary of the bible story and practical application for your life. I also appreciate that there is journaling space upon each page where you can write down your thoughts.

The pages within this sturdy book are not numbered with a date so you can pick up and start at any time of the year. Inside you will find over 370 pages worth of devotions that focus on relationships, bravery, inner beauty, love, and chasing your dreams. The pages are thick and have the same floral theme down the half inch margin. The print is not entirely too small either and it is a nice typeface that makes it easy to read. A handy ribbon bookmark is also in the book so that you may mark your place.

Beloved: 365 Devotions for Young Women

The title of this devotional says it is for young women, but I was really excited to share this devotion with my newly turned 12-year old. Many of the messages are relevant to any woman, young or old. To use this with Montana, each day I set about to read the devotion before her so that we could have a discussion after she had done her reading.
Beloved: 365 Devotions for Young Women

Typically, we would discuss the daily devotion on the way to cheer practice since we had a 30 minute drive. This scenario worked especially well for both of us but I think I would like to order my own copy so we don’t have to share. There were many heartfelt and thought-provoking conversations between her and I and her sisters as they chimed in with their opinions.

Beloved: 365 Devotions for Young Women
As I was reading ahead I found many of the devotions to be perfect for me and what I was dealing with day-to-day. Like on day 18, when it speaks of being overwhelmed and drowning. I was there and have been at that point many times over the last few months. This particular devotion called upon me to remember that even when I feel as if I am drowning, that God is our ark and our safe refuge from the floods. It’s simple little reminders like this that I am grateful to be able to have this book to share with my daughters.
Beloved: 365 Devotions for Young Women {Zondervan Review}
I love this devotion! In fact, I have already ordered my three older girls copies of this book and the other title Zondervan sells in the series for their stack of books at Christmas. This devotional book would be the perfect gift for any woman, young or old, on your Christmas list this year. Simple little devotions like these will make anyone’s day go smoother after spending time in the Word. Check out this book for yourself and also be sure to read my CrewMates thoughts by clicking the banner below.

Balancing Diapers and Deadlines from Lisa Tanner Writing ~ a TOS review

This is my last review of the 2018 year and its a good one! I don’t know about you, but I am a busy mom. Most of us moms are. I start my days early and end them as early as I possibly can, because I am tired by 8pm. While I do not work outside of the house, I am busy running our household and homeschooling my children in the process. Today I want to share with you a fabulous resource for work-at-home moms: Balancing Diapers and Deadlines from Lisa Tanner Writing.

Balancing Diapers and Deadlines {Lisa Tanner Writing Reviews}

Homeschooling is work. It takes effort and organization. So, while I don’t physically step outside of the walls of my house to “work”, I do consider homeschooling my daily job. Thats why I was excited to get to work through this new course from Lisa Tanner, a fellow CrewMate. She wrote this course to help busy moms balance our household responsibilities with while working from home.

This course has 30 lessons that are broken down into 8 smaller bite-sized units:

 • Welcome to Balancing Diapers and Deadlines
 • Building Your Foundation with the Basics
 • Minimize Your Decisions
 • Minimize Your Decisions: The Annual Meal Plan
 • Sustainable Growth
 • Growing a Business with Your Kids Around
 • Boost Your Productivity
 • Closing Thoughts

Each unit is full of tips and ideas to help you manage your home while growing your business or work opportunities. Wishing each lesson there can be worksheets and action steps to help you reach the goals set out in the lesson. The lessons are easy to read and not long at all. In fact, some units can be completed in one sitting.

Balancing Diapers and Deadlines

One section that I found especially helpful was on meal prep. Every single day, when I pick up my girls from a long day of training at the gym, they ask the dreaded three words that make me cringe…”What’s for dinner”? I struggle to come up with fast, yet healthy meals to feed my growing athletes.

It’s daunting sometimes, but they have got to eat so that means I need to carve out the time to cook. This section helped me realize that I can just have the kids pick out their favorite meals and then I can make sure they are balanced and healthy. This unit has a download of meal plans that I loved! I printed it out and used it as a guideline for our family as well as taking one weekend to sit down and make a list of seven of each child’s favorite foods to eat for dinner. When we were looking a little skimpy on the vegetables, I added them in too. I have since made a rotation of the kids favorite meals and which of those meals my older children can help cook. Because I realize I can’t do it all.

Balancing Diapers and Deadlines {Lisa Tanner Writing Reviews}

Overall, I am especially happy to have had a chance to work through Lisa Tanner Writing Balancing Diapers and Deadlines course. I still have a few units left to complete but I feel it provides work at home mom productivity tips that are helpful to everyday moms just trying to get through the day. So be sure to check it out even if you don't have babies in diapers, there is something for all! Check out what my CrewMates thought of this course by clicking the banner below.

Brinkman Adventures: Season 6: Underground Rising ~ a TOS review

Are you up for an adventure? If you have been reading this little blog of mine for any length of time you know that we love good books and we love audio theater just as much! So, if you are ready to experience the known for its action-packed, faith-building, real life, extraordinary drama adventures of the Brinkman family keep reading because they have just released their newest adventure, Season 6: Underground Rising.

Brinkman Adventures Season 6 Reviews

I love adding Audio Dramas to our listening time while we are out and about on our daily travels, so  I was thrilled to receive the digital version of Season 6: Underground Rising from Brinkman Adventures for our listening pleasure. The  Brinkman Adventures will take your family on heart-pounding, exciting adventures all the while showing God’s love for everyone on earth. We received a digital copy of Season 6 of The Brinkman Adventures which contains six action packed episodes. The company just recently moved to the six episode editions instead of the twelve like previous editions. But don't let that disappoint you. You still get over 2 hours of audio drama/entertainment that is perfect for a road trip.

Episodes in Season 6 include:

55 – Dutch Underground Part 1 ~ Theme: Resisting Evil
56 – Dutch Underground Part 2 ~ Theme: Helping When it's Risky
57 – Twice Born Fly  ~ Theme: Salvation
58 – I Wonder Why? ~ Theme: Trusting God's Plan
59 – Free Burma Rangers Part 1  ~ Theme: Can God Use a Warrior
60 – Free Burma Rangers Part 2 ~ Theme:  God Guides Even When He Feels Distant

Once we received our email to download the files we were all set to enjoy our adventure. Each Episode can be played on a phone or tablet, but first you need to download the files onto your computer and then sync them to your portable device. Trust me, it is a simple process to do!

After the syncing is complete, just press play and fasten your seatbelts as you step back in time to war-torn Holland. Based on real life events during this time period The Brinkmans’ great-grandparents are faced with a harrowing decision. Will they protect themselves from the Nazis or will they aid the Jews? In another episode, the boys Jack & Ian accompany Dave Eubank and his Free Burma Rangers on a daring mission to save a Burmese village from a rapidly approaching army bent on destruction.

Underground Rising Season 6 Brinkman Adventures

The Brinkman’s are not just your normal everyday missionaries. They are a modern day, large family with 9 children, whose powerful stories come together through the wild and crazy adventures they take to share God’s word. Their escapades will inspire the old and young and strengthen your faith to love and follow Jesus with all your might.

We spend a lot of time in our van driving here and there each week and while listening to the popular kids satellite radio is fun, one does quickly tire of hearing the same songs looping over and over. With my new van, I was so excited to be able to plug my phone into the socket and pull up Apple Car Play. From there I was able to access the files that were on my phone. I love that we can control the files just as we would manipulate a CD by rewinding etc. in case we missed something.

We have listened to many audio books before but nothing is quite as exciting as The Brinkman Adventures. From the very beginning, everyone in the van is completely immersed and listening intently to the stories to not miss a beat. Everyone in our family has thoroughly enjoyed these stories many times over.  Our family’s favorite stories from this collection would have to be episodes 55 and 56 about the Dutch Underground. This is a fascinating time period where ordinary people did extraordinary things to help the Jews during their time of persecution. I have always enjoyed studying this time period and frequently while listening to these stories I asked myself would I be so willing to help in the face of danger and death. I sure hope I would!

Season 6 continues in the tradition of high octane, faith growing stories. I will say that some of the stories were a bit intense. I did have to turn off the episodes and wait until my littles were not in the van to continue to listen. I would say, if you have children 10 and under to use your own judgement and listen along with them. If it is too intense, then save it for another time.

The Brinkman Adventures are available to purchase on CD for $23.99 or digital download for $19.99. The prices are worth every cent and more! Plus, you are in luck! Right now until October 31st you can get your own set of The Brinkman Adventures for 10% off by using the code  FALL10 . It's the perfect way to begin your adventures!

I Know It ~ a TOS review

I Know It Interactive Math Lessons K - 5 grade

Math is one of the subjects that has to be done daily, especially in the early years. It requires a lot of practice of basic math facts to acquire the solid foundation needed for upper level math down the road. Some of our weeks get extremely busy when we are on the go more than we are home. For those types of days I am especially glad to be able to take our math with us using a program called I Know It, the new program from the makers behind SuperTeacherWorksheets.com. We have been using the I Know It program to add supplementary online math lessons to our schedule when we cannot get to our regular math program.

I Know It is a comprehensive, interactive, online math practice site for K-5th graders. The program allows the student to work at their own level to gain mastery in skills that they may need to shore up. Students are free to work at their own pace and there are helpful hints that are just a click away if needed.

We received a home/family membership that is good for one parent and four children for a years term. Setting up my parent account was easy. I choose the main level for my children to work at, however, they are free to jump around to work in other levels as well. This worked especially well with my 3rd grader, McKenzie.

Assigning specific lessons or topics to complete is really simple in this program. Similarly, so is designating how much time you want your student to dedicate to practicing. The student is also free to choose topics they want to study if you are comfortable letting an older student have more control over their learning.

Instant feedback is given once the student submits the answer. If the problem is wrong, information about how to fix it is given to help the student be successful. When the answer is correct the student will see a dancing little robot guy in the bottom corner doing a happy dance. My student enjoyed seeing this dancing robot.

I Know It Interactive Math Lessons K - 5 grade

I mainly used this program with McKenzie, my 3rd grader. We are still in the process of figuring out how to get everything done during the day for school after she comes home from gymnastics training. Some days, when we just don’t get to our regularly scheduled math lessons I have no issue in assigning her 20 minutes of time on I Know It to work on math topics. Normally, McKenzie has been working with the program 2-3 days a week. More specifically on Monday and Wednesdays as those are our two busiest days of the week as a family.

Interactive Math Lessons K - 5 grade {I Know It Reviews}

Overall, McKenzie and I have enjoyed her usage of this program. I should mention that the lessons are aligned with the Common Core but we just ignore that and focus on what we need to get out of the program. The lessons are short and too the point without too much fluff. I appreciate that. She enjoys it because the graphics make the program fun without being too babyish. She excels in math, so having her do these lessons was not a chore for her. We will continue using the I Know It program as we finish up this school year because I know she is getting quality math instruction on the days that we can’t hit the books in her regular math curriculum. In the next few weeks, I plan to get my son using the Kindergarten portion of the program.

I definitely think you should check out this program for your family! In fact, I Know It offers a free 60 day trial to interested homeschoolers and teachers.  The free trial page can be found HERE. Also, click the banner below and see what my 54 CrewMates thought of this program too.
