WorthyKids Books ~ The Secret of the Hidden Scrolls Books 5 & 6 ~ a TOS review

Happy Friday friends!

You know I love sharing great books with you and today is no different. Today I have another great set of books from the WorthyKids Books. We have read the first 4 books and now I am excited to share with you the two newest books that McKenzie has been reading from the Secret of the Hidden Scrolls: The Shepherd's Stone (Book 5) and Secret of the Hidden Scrolls: The Lion's Roar (Book 6).

As before, both books are penned by M.J. Thomas and present Biblical truths in a fun, fictional way. The target audience for these books are for children in grades 1-3 or ages 6-9. McKenzie just turned 10 and she is in the 4th grade, but she still loves to read this series. With just over 120 pages each they are perfect for kids just hitting the chapter book level. The pages of each of these paperback books are filled with black and white kid-friendly illustrations that add detail to the story but don’t distract overall.

In book 5, The Shepherd’s Stone, we find our favorite main characters, siblings Peter and Mary, along with their trusty dog Hank, thrust back into the excited adventure in Bethlehem as they seek to discover the ancient scrolls. In this book we hear the familiar story of David, a young shepherd boy. Along the way we witness the epic fight between David and Goliath. All the while they are still trying to avoid their old enemy, the Solider of Darkness.

Book six, The Lion’s Roar, continues the exciting story as the siblings travel through the city of Babylon as they battle the dangerous High Priest who is secretly plotting to push Daniel out of his position of power. As the trio meet Daniel and his lion’s den and race chariots, they still have the Solider of Darkness to contend with.

McKenzie and I both have enjoyed these books tremendously! and think you should definitely check them out to see if they would be a good fit for a young reader in your household. Even though is is above the reading level these are great books that give us an important look back in history. McKenzie enjoyed reading these books silently and also read aloud to her younger brother.

We also can’t wait for the next installment, Book 7 to be released! Oftentimes, finding good quality literature is hard to do, but this series from M.J. Thomas has us excited to read more! These books have earned a coveted spot on our bookshelf! I can’t wait for Micah to be old enough to read these exciting books in a few years as well.

And guess what! You can enter to win signed copies of the entire 7 book series below!

Literature Guides from Progeny Press ~ a TOS review

Welcome back friends! We love adding Progeny Press guides to our Language Arts studies so we were excited to receive two new study guides this time to review. Over the years I have found that literature guides make reading even more enjoyable. This time, we were able to use the Little House on the Prairie and The Long Way to a New Land study guides.

Progeny Press has been a family owned and operated company since 1992. They produce high quality literature guides from a Christian worldview ranging from lower elementary through high school. They literally have 100+ guides and add 3-6 new titles each year covering all ages from lower elementary, upper elementary, middle school, and high school. They have got you covered!

We received an Interactive E-Guide which is a downloadable and printable study guide that goes along with the book. It’s called an interactive study guide because you don’t have to print it out. Rather, you can do all of your work directly in the PDF file on the computer. Once the study guide is complete you could then print the whole file and save your students work in a portfolio or binder. The interactive feature is really great if your child is not up to writing that much.

I am sure you are familiar with the true story of Little House on the Prairie. But it tells the story of Laura Ingalls who is living during the time of westward expansion. When her Pa decides the Big Woods of Wisconsin are too crowded for the family, the Ingalls, pack up their wagon and heads west in search of open land in Kansas. Life gets interesting once they settle into their new dwellings in Kansas.

The second study guide we received was for The Long Way to the New Land. It tells the story of Carl Erik and his family as they travel from Sweden to America. Through trials and tribulations the family faces hardship in their quest to reach America. Once they finally pass immigration, Carl Erik can finally say that they have made it and live the American dream.

Study Guides for Literature {Progeny Press Reviews}
Each chapter of the book is broken down in the E-Guide and the student’s knowledge is tested by several different types of learning exercises including: Vocabulary ~ multi types of exercises including multiple choice, context clues, fill-in-the-blank, and dictionary definitions. Comprehension questions ~ testing the students’ knowledge of what was read. Thinking about the story ~ thinking questions and making story connections. Descriptive writing ~ these fun exercises get kids thinking all the while encouraging writing skills. Literary devices ~ mood, irony, foreshadowing, and more are presented at grade level. Digging deeper ~ scripture and life lessons are presented in a Christian worldview.

Like past literature guides we have purchased or reviewed, we have enjoyed them tremendously. I love that the interactive format allows the student to type in the answers directly on their computer screen which is awesome for older students! It is also great for my 4th grader because she can now work on her literature as we are out and about. I also love that there is no limit on copying pages for use within our homeschool. Progeny Press Guides are economically priced from $10.99 to $27.99. Be sure to browse the online catalog for individual pricing on all the available guides.

Soundsory: Sound for Life Ltd ~ a TOS review

Welcome back friends! I am excited to share a great review with you today from Sound for Life Ltd. A few years ago we received the Forebrain, so I was really excited to try their new Soundsory headset with Micah.

I am sure you already know that God designed an awesome thing when he gave us our brain! The brain is essentially the crown jewel of our body, the powerhouse that makes everything go. With the help of the Soundsory, you child can get a music and movement program for the brain and body to work in tandem.

Soundsory was designed to help children with:
~ Motor delays, balance, and/or coordination
~ Children on the Autism spectrum or with developmental delays
~ Sensory and Auditory processing disorders
~ ADD and ADHD

I used this product specifically with my son Micah, who is a typical 5 year old Kindergarten boy. He has none of the conditions stated above but he does struggle with sitting still and concentrating. I honestly figured it was because he is a boy and I have had 5 easy going girls before him. So when this review popped up, I was eager to try it out to sit if it would help him sit for a little longer.

So, how does this work? Quite simply! Soundsory is a multi-sensory program that stimulates the auditory and vestibular systems. Each session is meant to last 30 minutes with 25 minutes of listening activities combined with 5 minutes of movement exercises. With my son, we were able to use this headset device to help Micah make better connections while he is learning to read.

I will have to say that this works for him. He enjoys listening to the music activities while working on his reading lessons. We didn’t really utilize the movement activities because he is quite coordinated already. But when checking them out to see what they involved he did enjoy bouncing and jumping about.

Don’t just take my word for it though! 31 of my CrewMates were also able to use the Soundsory in their homeschool. Read their thoughts and opinions and figure out if this is something one of your children can use. I am excited to continue to use this with Micah as he grows. Have I Got A Story For You ~ a TOS review

I have struggled with how to add art education to our homeschool for my younger kids, but HiGASFY Art History Video Series has made it possible to add this subject to my middle school daughter's course work! HiGASFY is the brain child of Mrs. Beth who used to be an international world traveling flight attendant. Since she has a love of art and history, she combined her years of traveling to create this exciting art curriculum. With her helpful paint drop buddy, Gasfy, together they make learning about famous artist come alive.

HiGASFY is a 16 week online subscription to an amazing art history program geared for students in 1st thru 8th grade. We received a three month subscription to work with it. With short 20-30 minute video lessons your child will study an in-depth lesson about a famous artist through four different art eras: Renaissance, Baroque, Impressionist and Post-Impressionist.. Artist such as Monet, VanGogh, and Picasso. After the video lesson, your child will spend roughly 30-40 minutes on the actual lesson and activities. Activities include free drawing, worksheets, and/or coloring.

The best part is that lesson plans are included to guide you the parent/teacher if you are not 100% comfortable. The lesson plans include four basic parts including: Objectives, Vocabulary, Suggested activities, and critical thinking. Writing assignments are included as well in some of the lessons. One of my favorite parts are the flashcards with the art samples. These are vivid pieces of real art that your student can check out to study first hand. For our needs, I have printed these art pieces, laminated them for durability because I have littles still, and hole punched them to store on a ring.

This program has been super fun for my middle schooler, Montana. She enjoys art and drawing so I was pleased to be able to offer a little more detail on some the great artist of yesteryear. She enjoyed that the video lessons were relatively short so she could get to the actual activities part. But don’t just take our word for it how great this program is, 44 of my CrewMates also used this art history program. And be sure to check it out for yourself, I think you will be pleasantly pleased.

Online math facts practice with Online Times Alive! ~ a TOS review

It never fails…around 4th grade my kiddos just seem to struggle with their math facts. Thankfully, I have a secret weapon to use to get them over the hump. Because everyone needs to learn the math facts and getting a head start is the best way to go. We received a 6 month subscription to the online Times Alive program and also the Times Alive App.

Memorizing multiplication facts can be boring and, for some students, difficult, but with the Online Times Alive subscription from City Creek Press, Inc. students learn math facts by watching videos and practicing math facts. Its super fun and for my ten year old little girl, she loves it!

Online Times Alive! is a fun, engaging, supplementary math program founded by former Sylvan Learning Center owner Judy Liautaud that has been “Helping Kids Get a Kick Out of learning since 1992.” Times Alive! is the interactive online game that uses stories, songs, and quizzes to help teach the multiplication facts from zero through the nine.

I love that this program really plays to the audio and visual learner that McKenzie is by providing short animated video clips with catchy lyrics for her to learn. Because we have been super busy running here and there to physical therapy and her own practices, utilizing the Times Alive App on my iPad mini has been a lifesaver for us.

My son, Micah who is 5, has really loved following along with McKenzie during her screen time. I love that the story is read aloud to the child while they view the music video and the catchy songs are also a favorite in our house. Just the other day I overhead McKenzie humming along to the 4x8 song and Micah tried to sing too.

I only discovered by accident that the data from the Online program does not transfer over to the App. The online program allows students to stop anywhere and resume where they left off. However, it doesn’t log in the info to the App. But for our family that is not a huge deal! We still love the program!
